ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Born in China to Australian missionary parents working in Chuhsein, John was sent many miles away to Chefoo School when he was only five years old.
Chefoo was already in Japanese hands, but after Pearl Harbour, the army moved into the school compound and took control.
Now they were prisoners of war and eventually moved to a larger internment camp outside Weihsein. They shared cramped conditions and the food was poor and scarce. There they stayed for the duration of World War II.
On 17 August 1945, seven US soldiers led by Major Staiger, parachuted into the camp to rescue them. One of the soldiers was a past pupil of Chefoo School. A British ship, the HMS Bonaventure brought them to Australia.
John enjoyed study and obtained his degrees at the University of Queensland while working full-time.
He married Joan and they had six children.
John’s passion throughout his life was to help others gain their self-esteem and assist those who found life just too difficult.
He had been there himself and found the answers expressed in his writing.
John passed away in June, 2005.
